As a Watson Caring Science distinguished affiliate hospital, Stanford Health Care (SHC) continues the intentional weaving of Caring Science integration into the fabric of our organization and strategic priorities through four key domains – leadership/legacy, praxis (theory-based practice), education, and research.

LEADERSHIP/LEGACY

Sustaining the healing environment culture of caring for staff, colleagues, patients/family, and communities.

  • Professional Practice Model with Watson Caring Science as a transdisciplinary theoretical framework.
  • Watson Caring Science introduced during recruitment, hiring process, and general clinical orientation.
  • Supported Caritas Coaches® or Watson Caring Science Ambassadors at all levels.
  • Creation of Caritas Coach Professional Development Pathway.
  • Received Stanford School of Medicine (SOM) Bechtel Caring Professionals Development Fund (the Human Caring Fund) funding $250K for Caritas
  • Nurse®/Caritas Partner™ Humanistic Care Certificate Program
  • Nursing and Patient Care Services Strategic Plan integrated Watson Caring Science into our delivery of care, nursing education, competencies, and recognition.
EDUCATION

  • Nurse Week-Caring Rounds and Shared Leadership Council-Leadership development series provide a platform and opportunity for our Caritas Coaches, Caritas Nurses and Caritas Partners to showcase their integration projects for the organization.

PRACTICE

Exemplary practice guided by informed lovingkindness using Watson’s Caring Science theory, values, morals, and philosophy.

  • Ten Caritas Processes® integrated into Initial Orientation Competencies
  • Ten Caritas Processes integrated into Learning Needs Assessment (LNA) for newly hired RNs.
  • Watson Caritas Measures™ Self CARING integrated into newly hired RN periodic check-in tool.
  • Patient Experience Survey in Qualtrics collecting Human Caring Questions based on Watson Caritas Patient Score®
  • Collaborated with the Patient Experience department to create a Human Caring Dashboard in Qualtrics
  • Participating in a Pilot Project with DAISY Foundation and WCSI to Integrate Watson Caring Science Language into DAISY Award nominations (Jan 2024)
  • Caritas Communitas: Inaugural Stanford Medicine Caritas Community Connections gathering- April 2024; launching this gathering of current and future Caritas practitioners to share their lived experiences and create community with a regular cadence moving forward.

Integration Outcomes:

  • Inaugural gathering: 25 Caritas Coaches, Nurses, Partners engaged in sharing of transpersonal caring moments and determined cadence for future gatherings.
RESEARCH/INQUIRY

Participation in clinical caring scholarship.

  • Watson Caring Science integration projects (i.e., LAMA, Caritas Coach; Caritas Nurse/Partner projects)
  • Caritas Nurse/Caritas Partner Humanistic Care Certificate Educational Program Evaluation
  • IRB Approved Caring Science study – Patient perceptions of caring in the hospital – a retrospective analysis (manuscript in progress)
  • Established Nurse Leader DNP Academic-Practice Partnership Program – sponsoring nurse leaders to complete their DNP education and their EBP QI Project based on an organizational need aligning with our Professional Practice Model (PPM) and Watson Caring Science theory/philosophy. They will also develop a sustainability plan.
